Dead Mans Shoes- Joseph East

First video; Dead Man’s Shoes. From 4:19 to 6:19

 Camera:

- Medium shots, Helps to show the locations that he moves to, there are only 17 cuts, but these are used well with medium shots to describe the location around them.

- Long shots, just like the medium shots, they show off the surroundings.

- Extreme long shots, this helps show the landscape, for example the ELS with the castle on the hill.

- Extreme close ups, to show off the characters emotions.

Sound:

-          There is a lot of non- diegetic sound throughout, the soundtrack played is very sinister, and matches well with the events which are shown through the screen. Like the flashbacks.

-          Little dialogue

-          There are some diegetic sounds, such as the wind blowing and the footsteps of the two main male characters, and obviously them speaking.

-          The music isn’t really at a fast pace either, which matches their life style.

-          The dogs barking can also be heard.

 Editing:

-          Few cuts, as I said above, there are only 17. But each of them are used well to create something new.

-          We can also straight away tell that the two male characters are very close, and have some sort of relation. Along with this we begin to see who the dominant one is.

-          When it comes to the flash backs, they don’t really fade into them, it’s just a straight cut, and a very ‘cheap’ old fashioned style is of video editing is used to make it look in the past. By turning it black and white and adding the fuzziness.

-          The music is linked well with the cuts, both acting at the same pace.

Mises En Scene:

-          It’s shot on a sunny day, in a grassy field. Not something you would usually relate to a thriller.

-          But they are on a farm, poor quality of living in a tin shed. Basic fire outside.

-          It’s clear they have no money.

-          The rest of the shot is filled on what looks like a dull council estate, the house they visit looks beaten down, over grown grass, dirty, cheap.

-          Children’s toys are shown in shots, along with the dog off the lead. Adding to the care free enviroment.

  1. This is very descriptive. What are these things communicating to the audience?
