INDIVIDUAL EVALUATION
- LEE BUBB -
1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
- Our characters, don’t really represent any social class. But, if we had to categorise them, I would say that they were middle-class. The reason being, their clothes are fit for the purpose of camping without them being very expensive or tattered. In addition, their language used (ie. the swearing/slang) also suggest them not being of upper-class and Received Pronunciation.
- The reason why we didn’t want to specify a certain social class is because we wanted the character to relate to as many people of the audience as possible. If we made them all upper-class, people who don’t act like that would tend to sway away from seeing the film and wouldn’t connect with the characters as much and as easily.
3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
- If a media institution would distribute our media product, I would like to think, that as a British horror/thriller film, we would follow a similar path as ‘The Women In Black’; I highly acclaimed British horror.
- They were distributed by Momentum Pictures (UK), CBS Films (US) and Alliance Films (Canada). They all belong to giant media conglomerates.
- Also, I would like to think our studio would be one Hammer Film Productions as they are notably recognised for making British horrors like, ‘The Women in Black’, ‘WakeWood’, ‘The Resident’ and ‘Let Me In’. These institutions and studios are very good at what they do; especially with British horror.
4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
- Our target audience were male, 15-27. The reason being, our three lead characters were all male teenagers and they could easily connect and relate with them.
- Also, people who enjoyed such films as ‘A Night In The Woods’, ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ and defiantly ‘Blair Witch Project’ should be able to enjoy our film as we have aspects of them all.
A Night In The Woods: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4izXz765iA
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKqFfkassgo
Blair Witch Project: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D51QgOHrCj0
- Like ‘A Night In The Woods’ and ‘Blair Witch Project’, we have shot the whole thing with a hand-held camera, P.O.V. in addition, like ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ and ‘Blair Witch Project’ we have a similar story line and events.
5. How did you attract/address your audiences?
- The Narrative: Our narrative was simple to follow and creates mystery because it ends on a cliff hanger. The spectators want to discover what happens next with our characters and asks the question; “What happened to the boys?”, “Who is this man with the chainsaw?” and “Why is he doing this?”
- The use of the Camera: The use of camerawork used is all hand held, P.O.V. shots. Because of this technique of filming, the audience can relate to this was of looking at the events unfolding; as though it was their point of view. Also, because of this camera technique, it gives a restrictive narrative as you can only see what the boys see.
- The use of characters & Mise en Scene: Because both are very simplistic and naturalistic (the characters portrayed, the setting and props used etc.) the audience can easily connect and feel like it is actually very real, and even think that this could actually happen to them.
- The use of characters (in depth): The characters we used were very relatable. We tried to show/portray three average/’normal’ characters in which everyone could somehow relate to (be it the decisions they make or how they act to certain events). We also had likable characters. Because of this the audience felt concern about what happened to the character during our film. Since we have included this reliability the audience can easily connect.
6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
This is my video answer to the question. (Sorry it wasn't a video but something was wrong with the image, so its now just a recording instead.)
7. Look back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product?
Myself and Chris Turner made a video for this question. (Sorry if we stray off track a bit... a lot)
