Batman Begins Opening - Chris Turner

Camera.
  • Shallow depth of field is used when showing the arrow head. This draws attention to the arrow head and implies significance.
  • An extreme close up is used when showing Bruce Wayne wake up from a bad dream. This gives a clear view on how he feels about the dream.
  • A wide shot of the Jail cell is used to reveal where Bruce is, but also creates a sense of unknown - why is he in the jail cell?
Mise En Scene
  • Variety of exterior settings - Garden, jail cell, Prison grounds.
  • Lighting - bright during dream however when Bruce awakes there is low key lighting to reflect the damp, dark feel of prison.
  • Pathetic Fallacy - cold harsh weather reflects the harshness of prison.
  • Costume - Smart, upper class clothes worn by the children during the dream juxtapose the scruffy clothes worn by the prisoners. Guards of prison are shown as they are wearing militaristic uniforms. All used to create a sense of realism.
  • Hair - Smartly styled hair in dream juxtaposes dirty, unorganised hair of Bruce in jail. His beard makes him look even more dirty and lower class. All used to create a sense of realism.
Editing
  • A jump cut between the dream and normal time is used to disrupt sequence and create an unsettling mood.
Sound
  • Diegetic sound - Breaking wood, clangs of pots and pans - used for realism.
  • Non Diegetic sound - Soundtrack is used to create a tense mood.
  • A surprising amount of dialogue for a thriller opening.
