Inception Opening - Chris Turner

Camera
  • An extreme close up of Don Cobb's allows the audience to get a bit more of the story as we can make out some cuts and bruises so we know he has been in a fight of some kind. This shot is a contrast to the huge powerful waves to show that he is weak and tired so this then raises questions about why he is that way, as the diagetic sound of the waves add a real sense of enigma to this scene.
  • A shallow depth of field is used when showing what was Don was carrying when captured. This draws attention to the importance of the spinning top which turns out to be very important later in the movie. This is also reflected by the fact  the other character stops what he is doing when he sees the spinning top.
Mise En Scene
  • Exterior setting - This is a beach, and this suggests they are on an island which emphasizes the isolation of the main character - Cobb.
  • Interior setting - Asian styled home/ building. This could reveal where they are as this style of building is only common in certain parts of the world. However, it still does not reveal the location fully.
  • Props - guns - The mid close up of the gun reveals the reason he may be there and the way they have used the light to emphises the guns features is very important to our understanding of the narrative. And with this shot raises questions about who he may be.
  • Costumes - militaristic - also creates the sense of danger as it suggests he has washed up at a highly guarded location, which also raises questions like why it is so guarded - what are they protecting?
Editing
  • Continuity editing - cut from beach to inside building - this mini ellipses is used to save time and keep viewer interested, but it also hides what had happened in between each shot; this raises questions.
Sound
  • Diegetic - waves crashing - The overbearing sound of the waves crashing into rocks in the opening really sets the film off with a lot of energy and suspense. there are very few cuts and long takes with CUs of the waves which suggest to us that this place is an island maybe even isolated but the setting is kept hidden throughout the beginning.
  • Non diegetic - Sound track - constructs strange atmosphere.
  • Parallel sound - waves crashing on screen - again creates a sense of realism.
  • No dialogue at very start, but some later in scene.

 This is first scene.

  1. Chris - you need to write much more than this on each one. You are really just identifying techniques here, but the point of this task is that you explain in detail how techniques contribute to the thriller mood, style and themes. You are really just beginning to do this in the sound section, but the mise en scene section is far too thin.
